Have you ever wondered where our name comes from?
March /mɑːtʃ/ has interesting meanings. According to the Cambridge Dictionary:
- As a verb, it means to walk quickly and with determination.
- As a noun, it signifies steady and inevitable progress, like the “march of history.”
Historically, March was also the first month of the year in the early Roman calendar*. It marked the start of spring with the vernal equinox—a time of renewal and new beginnings.
All of these ideas resonate with us, but none of them explain why we chose to be MARCH, the Methodology Architects (get it? Methodology ARCHitects!).
The real story behind MARCH
Our journey started from early work experiences, observing that success hinges on understanding how to approach a problem, process, or quality system. Companies thrive when they use the right structures, tools, and methodologies that align with their needs and development stage. Choosing the wrong approach? It’s a recipe for wasted time and effort.
It’s not about arguing over which framework—Lean, Agile, UX/CX, or customer centricity—is superior. An effective practitioner is methodologically independent, striving to choose what fits the context. They recognize their limitations, involve others when necessary, and focus on delivering results. This isn’t about being “Agile” or “Lean.” It’s about applying the right methodology at the right time.
There was no suitable term to describe this concept, which is why Roland and his team introduced the title Methodology Architect in 2019.
What is a Methodology Architect?
A Methodology Architect is a skilled professional who selects the most applicable methodology for a given situation and organizes it into a cohesive process. They might start by exploring a product with Lean or UX tools, experiment with service design techniques, transition to portfolio methodologies, and ultimately choose the most suitable delivery approach—whether iterative waterfall or Agile or whatever. This systematic and adaptive mindset is a valuable asset for any entrepreneur.
Core values of a Methodology Architect:
- Use common sense – Don’t adopt a method just because it’s trendy or labeled as innovative.
- Be methodologically independent – Choose the tools and frameworks that best suit the challenge and current state.
- Keep learning – The more methodologies you master, the wiser your choices and the greater your impact.
So, that’s the story behind our name. It’s more than a title—it’s our guiding philosophy, our ars poetica.
Happy March, everyone!
Be inspired—after all, it’s MARCH!
*(Fun fact: March became the third month of the year when January and February, initially added to the end of the Roman calendar around 700 BCE, were shifted to the beginning around 450 BCE.)
